First the dump cleanup. Timber Heritage Association volunteers drove hundreds of miles to to pick up and drop off the dump truck from the active part of the railroad. They also drove that railroad capable dump truck back and forth on the railroad to get the trash out of the inaccessible area between Loleta and Fernbridge. So with much help NCRA, NWP, THA, Eel River Resource Recovery, SWAP, Humboldt County, Wendt Construction, CCC, High Rock Conservation Camp, and many volunteers the area was cleaned up. Besides the dump truck, two excavator were used. One was used to load the dump truck, and the other was used load the four large disposal bins that Eel River Resource Recovery donated. We should be proud how much Eel River Resource Recovery does to help cleanup our area.

Loleta Antique Show and THA Speeder Run this Saturday 9-4ish

Looks to be another great weekend for fun, with some showers. This Saturday is the Loleta Antique Show and Loleta has been kind enough to invite Timber Heritage Association down to run once again. This show sponsored by the Loleta Volunteer Fire Department. According to their website it is one of the largest Antique Shows in Northern California. My only questions is how did I miss these gems for so long?

Petaluma 360:Little engine that could

What was that little yellow railroad cart making its way down Water Street a couple of Tuesdays ago?It was an old-fashioned speeder car operated by Petaluma Trolley, the local group trying to bring trolley service back to downtown Petaluma.

A few trolley supporters got the OK from the SMART rail district to run the speeder up and down the tracks as part of a maintenance project — picking up abandoned junk, clearing overgrown brush and picking out dirt that got packed up against the rails.

The speeder towed a couple of work trailers as it made its way down Water Street North, across Washington and as far as the closed-off Water Street trestle, said Mike Manson, who documented the journey in more than 250 photos.

But they weren’t done yet — a truck moved the little engine to the Petaluma Yacht Club, and it proceeded down First Street as far as Foundry Wharf. The excursion also went as far north as the rail crossing over the river, north of the Oak Creek Apartments.

The entire journey covered the still-accessible segments of the old Petaluma & Santa Rosa Electric Railroad, which has been silent for decades.

Passersby, including a lot of families with kids, got a kick out of the whole thing, Manson said — especially when they rang the speeder’s bell.

Cleanup went well today, I figure we have cleared a total of 0.8 of a mile. Doesn’t sound like much, but lots of heavy brush, and it was fun in the speeders. I figure 0.2 of a mil to go of heavy brush before hitting the easy stretch near the main highway. The easy stretch is about 1/2 mile. Then about 1.2 miles of mixed heavy and easy areas. About 2.2 miles of railroad total we want to clear at this point. Map here.

We had 3 speeders running on the line.

Speeder going away

On speeder, going backwards , most of the cleared right of way. Warning, very jumpy, and large file size.
