Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen was involved in a minor traffic accident Monday afternoon.

The accident, which took place at the intersection of 7th and H streets in Eureka, happened shortly after 2 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Nielsen was driving in the far left lane when a car suddenly turned in front of him, the CHP said.

”I tried to stop but just couldn’t do it in time,” Nielsen said.

The driver of the other car, a 20-year-old female from Arcata, apparently did not know that the road was a one-way street, the CHP said. She was driving in the right lane making a left turn when the collision occurred.

The accident left only minor scratches on the two vehicles, and both drivers were uninjured, the CHP said.

Lets see here, they were driving on H st. Cheif on the far left, the other person seems to be on the far right leaving the middle lane open.  In order for this person not to know that this was a one way street, they had to miss these clues, one way signage, the chiefs car, plus other traffic traveling the same way, the directionality of the stop lights including the one at the intersection this happened, white instead of yellow lane markings, and parking along both sides of the street pointing the same way!
