Neglected news item gets lost in shuffle – Humboldt Beacon.

Prior to his becoming 3rd District Supervisor, Lovelace maintained that Campbell had a conflict of interest stemming from his role as mayor while having financial ties to Pacific Lumber, his former employer. The Beacon presented both Lovelace’s allegations and Campbell’s rebuttal. A recent email from Lovelace indicated that he continues to stand by his allegations. Campbell’s response was that the charges were “truly bogus.” News stories ignited bloggers’ imaginations with enough grist for speculation and conspiracy theories.

How far the investigation actually went, we don’t know, because when Campbell passed away on Oct. 19, 2008, the FPPC officially closed the case in November. As a matter of practice, the Commission notifies only the claimant of actions taken and don’t run to the media with their findings.
