SAN FRANCISCO — Bay Area Rapid Transit officials are looking at charging more to use trains during peak hours to get riders to travel at other times.

BART has initiated a study that also considers increasing fees for parking in BART lots and using certain stations during rush hour to reduce congestion.
BART officials say the number of passengers the system can handle is approaching capacity, and trains during high-demand hours are jammed.

Jeffrey Tumlin, a transportation consultant working with BART on the study, says fee hikes could also pay for more trains and other improvements that would also reduce congestion.
The study is expected to be completed next spring. BART’s board of directors will make any final decisions.
