Dear Editor,

With all the budget talks going on lately in the city and county regarding where to get monies for public services and what programs are to be cut because lack of money. It would seem that all parties would be looking at alternatives, such as something right in front of us, the Redwood Marine Terminal and railroad.

The building of the terminal and railroad would mean local jobs. It would take some of the burden off the local services by providing benefits to the workers. There would be good-paying local jobs for us, our children and our children’s children. They wouldn’t have to move away to secure a productive, happy life. We would have the money to build green communities, parks, trails and more. We would have the money to improve our infrastructure so local merchants would have feasible and economical ways of moving their products. These are just some of the reasons why we should be looking at fast-tracking these projects.

Once online, these projects would infuse money into the local economy. We would not have to be beggars, but be the controllers of our own destiny. It would not be necessary to make cuts to some of the essential services of the community, such as our police and fire departments as well as many more community services that are vital to sustaining the quality of life we deserve. We can accomplish this by all of us working together in making these projects the state-of-the-art and environmentally sound in all aspects.

Our elected officials have a fiduciary responsibility to make this a priority and move the projects forward.

Richard Marshall
