ER’s excuse for mess up on calendar, reader’s didn’t submit them

Note the comment below the article. That really doesn’t cut it for a newspaper that claims to be local. I’d accept missing minor events, because reader’s didn’t submit them, but major? My suggestion, do a least some googling, and find out about your area, then do a reprint. Does this also mean that readers don’t do anything in Arcata, or attend any of these events?

Reporter calendar leaves out some major local events
by Matt Lang, 12/24/2007

To the Editor:

I was very excited to see your 2008 calendar of local events in The Reporter (Dec 17, 2007). A calendar is something I can always use and it has some excellent local pictures in it. On top of that, I figured that a “calendar of local events” would be extremely helpful to me as I plan out my year.

Unfortunately, there are several large local events missing from your calendar.

Off the top of my head none of these events appear to have made it into your calendar: The Redwood Coast Jazz Festival, Blues on the Bay, the North Country Fair, the Oyster Festival, the Mateel’s Summer Arts Fair, the Redwood Acres Fair, the Humboldt County Fair, Woofstock, Reggae on the River, Paddlefest, and the Organic Planet Festival.

There are possibly some others too. It’d be great if you could print the dates of those (and any others I forgot), so we could all write them into our “calendar of local events.”

For the record, this next year’s fourth annual Organic Planet Festival will take place on Sunday, Aug. 24.

(Editor’s note: We ran a section in our paper frequently on Page A2, asking community residents to send us their events for 2008. We ran all the events that we received. When we receive notice of events throughout the year, we run them in our calendar and in the What’s Happening section of the paper. And, we often cover the events with photos and stories.)

Lessons learned. You can bet they will do it next year. It was a good idea, but an overworked staff had more to do than they could manage, it seems.
