Santa and Mrs. Claus wave to Roots of Motive Power visitors from the Holiday… (The Willits News)

Santa and Mrs. Claus greeted the nearly 650 area residents who joined them to chug around the Roots of Motive Power track on Saturday, December 1.

Steam filled the air as lines of youngsters and parents alike waited patiently with tickets in hand to greet Santa Claus and ride around the one-mile loop track.

Some of the throng rode in a restored North Western Pacific caboose behind an old-fashioned steam powered Mason County Logging Company engine and others in an open car pulled by a unit once used by the Long Bell Lumber Company.

Children received railroad engineer’s caps to commemorate their trip.

Roots volunteers manned the trains and provided the gifts and refreshments in their annual holiday gift to the community. The cookies, brownies, cakes and trays of vegetables kept the crowd well fed while they visited the Christmas trees in the Engine House bedecked with railroading ornaments.

Inside the Engine House, the model trains raced around the tracks, transporting children of all ages back to the age of lumber in the Redwood Empire, no doubt inspiring a few youngsters to ask Santa for a train set of their own this year.
