MIJ LTE:The train-traffic connection

The letters for the railroad, just keep coming.

The IJ’s Nov. 28 front page contained two stories that when taken together boggle the mind.

On the one hand, Marin residents consider traffic their biggest concern.

On the other hand, the Board of Supervisors joins Novato in a lawsuit to stop the revival of freight trains in Marin.

Doesn’t anyone see the connection? The trains could keep many trucks off our one highway.

A letter to the editor the same day describes a Petaluma resident’s difficulty in getting to a job in Terra Linda. Neighborhood leaders complain about drivers trying to bypass Highway 101 by using the side streets. Problems are getting worse by the day.

Isn’t it time for the supervisors and officials from our towns, especially Novato and Larkspur, to begin to work together to identify and support the best alternative systems, including the train. It is time to consider the common good and plan for the future health of Marin County.

We can’t keep widening Highway 101 forever. Consider the huge costs and inconvenience to businesses of our current project through San Rafael.
